Monstervember 2019 Day 3 Swordfish

Monstervember 2019 Day 3 Swordfish

Below the depths marches a dreadful thing. It’s neither live nor dead, but it has a determined look on it’s face and is displaying two deadly swordfish skeleton swords.

It’s day 3 of Monstervember and today I decided to try out a new media I haven’t messed with in quite awhile. Probably haven’t made a piece of art with pastels since middle school. I had gathered quite a collection of clearance art supplies from back to school sales over the years. So I decided to try it out today.

I used some black paper and drew out what I wanted in pencil. Then I tried first coloring with some soft pastels. Wasn’t getting the nice detail I wanted though. I tried using charcoal pencils to add outlines after the coloring but it wasn’t working for me. So I switched to oil pastels. Never messed with them before, but got better results once I learned the correct pressure and smudging technique to get the look I wanted. So this is a massive hybrid of soft and oil pastels with white and black charcoal pencils adding detail lines.

Gotta say this turned out pretty darn cool. The undead pirate looks terrifying and I even manged to get the perspective of it marching forward with the perspective size difference in the legs.

Will see what  I can come up for tomorrows prompt, Shoe.
